Rich quoted in Tampa Bay Tribune article on patriotism
Monday, May 26, 2008
(The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation)In a Memorial Day article,
the Tampa Bay Tribune wrote
about formerly apolitical symbols of
patriotism becoming tied to
political views of the war in Iraq.
"Some complain that the symbols we
use to show loyalty to homeland have morphed
into pro-war emblems."
For
some lapel pins and car decals are a genuine
display of love of
country, while others think of them as a
shortcut. Rich Harwood
described the tension: "Many Americans are
struggling with the
contradiction internally.They hold both views
at the same time - that
waving a flag is a
patriotic shortcut at the same time that it's
a genuine, heartfelt
gesture."
Rich argued the debate over
Senator Obama's decision
to wear or not wear an American flag pin -
"isn't really about Obama's
pin or bumper stickers or yellow ribbons. The
debate
is how we see patriotism today in this
changing world.
