Ask Detroit

As part of the 2009 Harwood Public Innovators Lab, 70 public innovators fanned out around downtown Detroit to talk with people about their aspirations for their community.  Ask Detroit was a chance for people to talk about the kind of community they wanted to live in.  By starting with aspirations instead of complaints, or wish lists we heard something surprising.

Just two days after General Motors declared bankruptcy people’s highest priority for their community was that it be safe and clean.  Clearly, the faltering economy and negative job news were important to those we spoke to, but they were not the primary concerns. Rather people spoke of their aspiration for a safe, clean and connected community.
