Public Broadcaster Videoconference Draws Nationwide Audience
August 10 2009
( Harwood Online
)
Last Friday, public broadcasters from Chevak,
Alaska to Fajardo, Puerto Rico signed to watch
the kickoff event of The Stations Turning
Outward Initiative - a partnership between The
Corporation for Public Broadcasting and The
Harwood Institute. The Initiative and
videoconference give broadcasters the tools to
deepen the impact of CPB’s economic response
grants and demonstrate their local relevance at
a time of financial pressure.
In
all, people from 41 states and Puerto Rico
signed-up to learn how public broadcasters and
others can turn outward toward their
community and deepen their local relevance
and impact.
In
studio, Rich was joined by Joe Krushinsky
from Maryland Public Television and Flo Rogers
from KNPR (Las Vegas) each of whom participated
in the Community Engagement Initiative (CEI).
They both spoke of the impact that Harwood work
and ideas had on their community, their staff
and their stations. Mikel Ellcessor from WDET
in Detroit (and a recent Lab alum) also joined
the conversation to speak about the importance
of stations turning outward in places like
Detroit.
